1. Stopping any further damage:
At this point you won't know if this theft was a one time thing and this is the end of it, or if it will happen again and again and threaten everything you own. You'll never know when they'll hit you again or where or how. If you decide the best thing for you to do is to take action and stop it now, you'll need to know what to do and who to contact in order to repair your credit records and block access to your credit accounts. 2. Recovering your losses: You'll run into resistance. Banks and other financial institutions won't want to refund your money and may maintain that, in any case, they are not liable for your loss. You'll need to know the time constraints that you have and the state and federal agencies, their addresses and phone numbers, where you can appeal for help. 3. Restoring your credit: (a) Stopping creditors and collectors from harassing you: You'll run into resistance. When you know how you can force collection agencies and collectors to stop harassing you, but you'll still be on the hook with them until the creditor discharges your debt. (b) Getting creditors to discharge fraudulent debts: Creditors will resist discharging your debt. Without proof to the contrary, they will maintain that there was no identity theft and that you are responsible for it. You will have to know how to approach them to get their cooperation and what kind of affidavit, police report and other proof you will be expected to give them. 4. Clearing your name of crimes you didn't commit: If damage to you has been purely financial, the previous three steps may be enough. But in cases where you may be arrested (and jailed) again and again for someone else's outstanding warrants, you will have to take further legal action to clear your name.
