       What exactly are sound-alike words?

       Sound-alike words are the two or three words that sound exactly the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings. They went to the store. Amy went, too. They bought two apples.
One of the apples had won first prize in the contest.
Joe was to meet them to carry the meat they bought.
They have a new knife with which to pare the pair of apples.
They put their muddy shoes on the mat over there.
Audrey made them mop up the mud so the maid wouldn't have to do it.
Amy injured the heel of her foot but expects it to heal soon.
Joe is new to the group but knew he'd be accepted.
The group said "no" to Andy, but he doesn't know it yet.

       No one is aware of these errors in their own writing, and spell-checkers don't catch them because the WRONG words are spelled correctly.

      These are a different kind of words, homophones, and using them correctly is simply a matter of seeing them used the right way.
