Sound-alike word mistakes, mis-using one word for another that sounds just like it, is profoundly disturbing to many readers. Just seeing that mistake in print offends them so deeply that they'll discredit the ad, the product AND the writer. Simply put, they see the writer as careless, irresponsible and without credibility. What exactly are sound-alike words? Sound-alike words are the two or three words that sound exactly the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings. A problem arises when spelling one of these words by the way it sounds. Independent of meaning (the context in which it's being used), the spelling is often the WRONG word.
No one is aware of these errors in their own writing, and spell-checkers don't catch them because the WRONG words are spelled correctly. These are a different kind of words, homophones, and using them correctly is simply a matter of seeing them used the right way. The "WRITE LIST of WRONG WORDS" lists 49 sets of the worst offenders right up front with 700 or so to follow. Laid out in spreadsheet format, and listed alphabetically by the way they sound, every word is fast and easy to find along with definitions and examples of its use. So, if you are writing descriptions for eBay or the other auction sites, writing classified ads for Craigslist, writing internet content or copy to be turned into an eBook, run your spell checker first. Then, before you submit it, get two or three friends to check it for misused sound-alike words. Or, to check it yourself, use the "WRITE LIST of WRONG WORDS" that you can order for download below. Or get a proofreader to do it for you.
